An Open Letter to Phil Robertson

Dear Mr. Robertson:

I won’t call you Phil, like everyone else does, because I do not know you personally. This is in the same way that you do not know me personally; however, that did not stop you from making a blanket statement about me and those like me. I’m talking about gays, not terrorists (just one group to which you equated us).

My name is Blake Haney. I was born and raised in Tennessee. I’m not just someone shouting about what you said just because I read about it on Facebook. I am someone who used to watch your show, though I have not watched it since the dispute with A&E over how much money to pay you and your family. I bought family members Duck Dynasty merchandise even after I stopped watching, but that ends today.

Growing up, I enjoyed hunting with my dad. I wasn’t avid. I wasn’t good at it either. I just enjoyed spending time with my father on the water. Waders, camo, guns…duck calls. I own one duck call. It was my dad’s, and I have held on to it for years. He even checks in every now and again to make sure I still have it. Sometimes, I’ll pull it out of the box, and I’ll call just to hear the sound. It’s a classic Duck Commander call. Funny how you were part of my life at an early age, and I never even knew.

Today, I am at a different place in my life. After years of battling, I’ve finally accepted myself for whom God made me to be—gay. I have found a church that is accepting and loving, and I have accepted a calling to help young LGBT people find their place within the church. God loves them just as much as He loves you. You had an opportunity to use your platform for greater good. Instead, you singled out a group that fights tooth and nail just to have what you talk so much about on your show: family.

Comments such as yours bring young people to their knees. They’re praying without seeing change. They’re trying, and they are failing. Instead of going on, they are choosing to end it. To say that I didn’t consider using the shotgun I had used to hunt with my father to end my own life would be a lie. Thankfully, I was able to push forward.

Your words have meaning, sir, and you must take accountability for them. I don’t care from what generation you are a product. You are old enough to know better. As one of my former professors used to tell me, “Blame your parents for the way you are. Blame yourself for the way you’ve stayed.” It’s okay to have an opinion, but make sure it’s an educated one. Critically read your Bible. Befriend an openly gay person, and ask questions. Grow.

  1. In the bible it states that God calls homosexuality an abomination. Phil Robertson was quoting the bible correctly. Why is it that those of us who believe the word of God and try to live it the best we can, are persecuted for doing so? WE christians seem to have no freedom of speech. Everyone else may say what they please but we christians cannot. One atheist can fight to get a picture of Jesus removed from a school…nevermind that the majority is fighting for it to remain, and still it is removed. What about OUR rights? I would like to believe that most christians are not trying to persecute those not of the same belief as we are supposed to love everyone and not judge. I have just as much right to have my beliefs as you do.

    • Wow, talk about nonsense!

You are free to believe whatever you want, you are free to talk about your religion as much as you want, just like us who have never been indoctrinated with middle eastern iron age mythology has the right to call you out on your nonsense. You have the right to have your own opinions but not the right to your own facts.

What you can not do, as a member of any mythology, is to try to enforce your mythological nonsense on other people nor demand that I or anyone else live according to your mythological drivel.

You don’t like gay marriage? Don’t marry one from your own gender. Besdies, I guess you are only supporting a single biblical marriage and not all 8 of them or are you?

You are not persecuted, you congregate every week in gargantuan buildings of oppulence to spread your mythology and I see not a single place in the US where churces and religion have been banned nor do I see anyone being arrested for beiung a Chrsitian. You, Miss, are the worst of the worst, A bigoted hypocrite who can not stand others having a different opinion and the gall to voice it. In your book, a militant atheist is one who opens his mouth.

You Miss Arrogant Self Centered Moron, is the problem with society today, dumb and proud of it!

      • I do not condemn nor judge anyone of differing beliefs. HOWEVER, it is MY right, Mr. Robertson’s right and all others like us to voice our beliefs in the media just as it is YOUR right. There is ONE reality show which proudly voices christian beliefs. Bob Harper just “came out” on Biggest Loser, Jillian is lesbian, countless HGTV shows involve gays, Glee, not reality but still gay males & females. Million Dollar Listing real estate show…2 gay Realtors…the list goes on and on. The Bible is the oldest book….it is a book of truth. I don’t care if you believe it or not. But I am entitled to voice my views just as you are. I don’t care how you choose to live your life but we Christians need to band together and take a stand for our beliefs too.

      • Dear A&E Network,

I am writing to you regarding your network’s intolerant, discriminatory, and punitive treatment of Mr. Phil Robertson, star of A&E’s #1 hit show, Duck Dynasty.

Mr. Robertson’s comments in GQ Magazine are simply reflective of a Biblical view of sexuality, marriage, and family – a view that has stood the test of time for thousands of years and continues to be held by the majority of Americans and today’s world as a whole.

Many members of the LGBT community may not agree with this view, but the notion that a free-thinking American should be discriminated against simply for expressing a perspective that is in conflict with another is patently un-American and flies in the face of true tolerance and civility. A&E’s position, which in your own words is “championing” the gay and lesbian community — which I believe you have the freedom to do — excludes the views of Faith Driven Consumers and effectively censors a legitimate viewpoint held by the majority of Americans.

As a Faith Driven Consumer, I am signing this petition to demand that my views be treated with equality and respect in America’s rich rainbow of diversity.

I am asking your network to immediately reinstate Mr. Robertson to Duck Dynasty, and to formally apologize to him, his family, and the millions of viewers who tune in every week, stand by him, and share his worldview. While the LGBT community may be offended by his opposing viewpoint, your rash, discriminatory, and unfair treatment toward Mr. Robertson — a recognized symbol of the faith community — is a slap in the face to Faith Driven Consumers and everyday Americans alike.

There are 46 million Faith Driven Consumers in America today who spend 1.75 trillion dollars annually. Should you refuse to equally respect and welcome our legitimately held views, we will gladly stop watching this and all other A&E programming and turn to any reformulation of Duck Dynasty on another network – while simultaneously supporting brands that stand with the show and the Robertson family.

      • Dear Earl,
You’re calling Christians hypocrites and bigots while we constantly walk on egg shells around LGBT. Personally I try to keep a mutual balance between my beliefs and my LGBT friendships. I don’t want to hurt those friends of mine, but this his gotten out of hand. For years we’ve sat back and given gays their rights. We have folded to give way to rightfulness even though some/most of us probably didn’t agree with it. As I read your statement, you were hypocritical yourself. I counted the words mythological and mythology 4 times in your statement. Are you saying we can’t hurt your feelings by one little statement, but you can say whatever you want to degrade Christianity? That hurts me and I know it hurts others like me. You don’t have to believe in it, but you don’t have to put it down either. That’s how I am with my LGBT friends. I don’t necessarily think it’s totally fine, but I don’t put it down and I support them because I understand biologically it’s possible for males to be born with female tendencies and vice versa.

    • It has nothing to do with his beliefs, or the direct quotes from the bible. It has everything to do with his blanket statement of putting the whole LGBT community in the same category as bestiality, terrorists, and other horrific groups. He took a quote from the bible to show his beliefs, then added to that quote with bigotry. If he would have stopped with the quote, no one would have gave it a second glance.

    • There shouldn’t have any religious bias materials in a school. Only factual things children can learn from. and people should start giving themselves credit for the thing they work hard for. Just like you people teach your children witch craft isn’t real. What’s the difference between a magic wizard and god? answer: the wizard is more plausible…. Also when christians open their mouths about their opinions its always ignorant and extremely bias. And i’m certain that no one chooses to be gay.

    • Everyone is entitled to their opinion and entitled to voice it. That does not, however, mean everyone has to respect your opinion. I could have the opinion that racial minorities shouldn’t be allowed to have children but that wouldn’t be something a tv network would allow on one of their shows because it is not something a company would want to seem to condone. You reference that shows just have gay people on it like its a big deal that they’re just tolerated. yeah that’s different from deciding to belittle, judge, and insult a certain group of people. a majority of Americans would back a federal law legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states (Source gallup: wow I’m SO sorry that your hate isn’t tolerated anymore but that doesn’t mean you don’t have freedom of speech. The bible is not the oldest book. not even close.

    • > The Bible is the oldest book….it is a book of truth.

Hmmm… Oldest non-Pentateuchal books of the Hebrew Bible (the Book of Nahum, Book of Hosea, Book of Amos, Book of Isaiah) ~800 BCE… Epic of Gilgamesh ~1900 BCE… Akkadian Legend of Etana ~2600 BCE.

      “Oldest” indeed.

    • Diane,

Your comments is so insanely ignorant that I almost don’t even know where to begin. People who are defending his right to free speech are totally ignoring the NETWORK’S same exact right to free speech. He isn’t being locked up, he isn’t being with charged with anything, his right to free speech wasn’t infringed on at all. His employer is just also exercising their exact same right. Is it against the law for me tell my boss to fuck off? Nope, and I can do it all day if I’d like to. But guess what, they have every right to fire me for doing so. If A&E does not think that their employee has upheld the standards set forth by their organization then guess what, they don’t have to employ him. Such a decision does not infringe upon the man’s free speech one bit. Not to mention, I don’t think that any sort of hate speech has a place in modern day humanity. The first amendment shouldn’t give you an excuse to be discriminatory. I don’t care what you’re religion or political affiliation is – I find it to be completely ignorant and unbelievable that the right to love another human is so hotly contested. We are all in this together, let’s act like it. Let people love.

    • let me clarify to you and how wrong phil is..and he also is responsible for the increase in gay man almost got killed by several men and now disabled for life, because of his ignorant sermons..more and more ministers are not preaching like that anymore, because of the growing number of people leaving the church because of this 75% of the usa so can say their going away from God all you want, but the fact remains most of the anti gay rant preacher sermons turn out to be gay..self hating gay men trying very hard to show to everyone their straight.

The passage that is *against gays* is where Leviticus says “it is an abomination to sleep with man as you do with woman.” At that time abomination meant unclean. Unclean as in physically unclean not morally unclean. It is abomination to eat shell fish at that time. Why? because they live at the bottom of the ocean and eat the crap from other fish. That is unclean. Why is it an abomination to shave because if you cut yourself it causes infection without the protection we have today from proper cleaning. Why can’t a man sleep with a man because it is physically unclean.

Being gay is not a choice therefore it can not be a sin. People who are gay do not choose to be gay. You can’t control what attracts you to a person.

Leviticus also says that people can’t shave or get hair cuts. He says it is an abomination to eat shell fish.

Deuteronomy says that if a child misbehaves then he shall be stoned on a high hill in front of his elders. It also says that if a widow did not bear a child with her husband then she is required to sleep with all the men in her husband’s family until she does get pregnant. you cant cherry pick the also says it is a sin for a woman to have short hair, have tattoos and many other things.

so yes the newer version does use the words homosexual sin but look at all the versions before it. they all say unclean, not sin. scarry thing is many people don’t even know the constitution or how the law process works..crying foul when gay people win equality..right now they can be fired just for being gay and other..its jim crow laws against gay people just like when black people were discriminated..and you can try to justify it with religion, but that is NO justification to use bigotry, insecurity and intolerance

  2. This is beautiful. I agree with you. I personally boycott this show and all their merchandise. I always knew deep down there was a reason and now.. oh now I know. Please remember Mr Haney, you have allies and people who support the lgbt community. Please stay strong sir

  3. I want to clarify another matter..the bible also never said marriage is between a man and a woman only..and it is very wrong for pastors like the one in Portland Tennessee to say gay people need to be executed in Christians that is very unchristian..and he is going by the old testament..cherry picking to create intolerance and keep unequality for them..its wrong and it has to stop..more and more of these anti gay ministers are found out to be gay like a tv evangelist that talked very anti gay and his wife came home early at their home in Kentucky and found him and his secret boyfriend naked having well as that pastor in north Carolina that says in his sermon gay people need to be in a concentration camp..the scarry thing is his followers believe him just like phil’s ignorant bigoted sermons..preachers are the best salesmen in the world like my late father said and it is true when all the people believe him and the other pastors without question..that is people are 20% of the population and I think its much higher than that..that was the Kinsey study in the 1950’s when he said 20%..i think the numbers are much higher, because of so many that live a lie and pretend their not gay, because of the social intolerance and many are married to women with children..I don’t think that is fair to the woman when their life is being wasted in a phoney, sexless marriage..moreless in name only..these men have such high stress living a lie…some actually don’t live long because of the tremendous stress that live under..but live a lie because they want to be socially accepted.
